How to submit a meter self-read
If you have received an estimated bill and have a Basic Meter, you can submit your own meter read by following the below steps:

What is the difference between a digital (smart meter) and a basic meter?
For your electricity supply, you can have a digital (smart) or basic meter. Both meters measure how much electricity you use, however, the smart meter is a more automated and accurate meter which regularly sends your data to your electricity retailer. Whereas the basic meter requires a manual read.
For your gas supply, basic meters are used for most residential and small business customers.
Why would my meter self-read be rejected?
Your meter self-read can be rejected for one of the following reasons:
- The read was provided after the invoice due date
- The read was too high or too low compared to the last official read
- The read has been taken too far in the past
- The photo provided wasn't clear or accurate
- No photo was provided when requested
- Our records indicate the meter is faulty, disconnected, or pending replacement
Installations and timeframes for electricity meters
When installing a new electricity meter, as a small customer, you have the right to have your meter installed in a timely manner. Unless otherwise agreed with you, we must arrange for your meter to be installed.
Connection service not required:
Where a connection service is not required, no later than 15 business days after Tango Energy receives your request for the meter to be installed
These will not apply where:
- You have not entered into an agreement with Tango Energy for the meter to be installed;
- The proposed site for the meter at your premises is not accessible, or safe, or ready for the meter to be installed, or your distributor has not completed your connection service;
- Installing your meter requires interrupting supply to another customer;
- You are a customer with an aggregated electricity consumption agreement with Tango Energy.
From the date that any of the above cease to apply, we must arrange for your meter to be installed no later than 15 business days or on a new date agreed with you.
Connection service required:
Where a connection alteration by your distributor is also required (e.g. solar), unless otherwise agreed with you and your distributor, no later than 15 business days after receiving the request.
These will not apply where:
- You have not entered into an agreement with Tango Energy for the meter to be installed;
- The proposed site for the meter at your premises is not accessible, or safe, or ready for the meter to be installed, or your distributor has not completed your connection service;
- Installing your meter requires interrupting supply to another customer;
- You have not met the conditions required to comply with your connection contract with your distributor;
- You are a customer with an aggregated electricity consumption agreement with Tango Energy and our agreement specifically provides for the timeframe not to apply; and
- Augmentation is required for the purposes of the connection alteration and has not yet been completed.
From the date that any of the above cease to apply, we must arrange for your meter to be installed no later than 15 business days or on a new date agreed with you and your distributor.
New connections (Please note that Tango Energy does not currently offer new connections):
For a new connection, no later than 6 business days from the date Tango Energy is informed by your distributor that the connection service is completed.
These will not apply where:
- You have not entered into an agreement with Tango Energy for the meter to be installed;
- The proposed site for the meter at your premises is not accessible, or safe, or ready for the meter to be installed, or your distributor has not completed your connection service;
- Installing your meter requires interrupting supply to another customer;
- You are a customer with an aggregated electricity consumption agreement with Tango Energy.
From the date that any of the above ceases to apply, we must arrange for your meter to be installed no later than 6 business days or on a new date agreed with you.
